💻 Desktop App Installation Guide
System Requirements
- macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later
- Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) or Intel processor
- Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
- 50MB free disk space
Installation Steps
macOS
- Download the DMG file
- Open the downloaded DMG file
- Drag "Expense Sorted" to your Applications folder
- Eject the DMG and launch from Applications
Windows
- Download the installer (.exe)
- Run the installer and follow the prompts
- Launch Expense Sorted from the Start Menu
First Launch
On macOS, the app is notarized by Apple, meaning it has been scanned for malware. On first launch:
- macOS may show "Expense Sorted is from an identified developer"
- Click "Open" to proceed
- If you see "Cannot be opened", right-click the app and select "Open"
Offline Behavior
The desktop app works fully offline. All core features including transaction categorization, portfolio tracking, and analytics work without an internet connection. Internet is only required for fetching live stock prices and checking for app updates.
Data & Privacy
Your financial data is stored in a local SQLite database on your computer. We never have access to your data—it never leaves your computer.
On macOS, you can find your data at:

Interactive Brokers has native import support. All other brokers work via CSV import with smart column mapping. If your broker doesn't work, email us and we'll help.
